I've always felt that Chinese companies don't explore the rich repertoire of Chinese mythology and legends enough to make interesting dolls. While I understand that it would be hard to market stories that is unfamiliar to people, but I've also realized that people will buy whatever if you can sell it to them. :>
I am rather please with Angell Studio trying to tap into the rich and colour Chinese stories.
Their release of the snake ladies are quite promising.
Legend of the White Snake
Zhen - White Snake Lady
QingLin - Green Snake Lady
I rather like Qinglin myself. Her face is quite pretty whereas Zhen is sorta... meh. She is so standard good nature looking. What is interesting I think is that I've always imagined the White Snake Lady is older and more mature looking and Green Snake is younger and more naive. AS took a different approach I suppose and they look the opposite.
There is also the alternate version of the same dolls...
Lady Gaga hair Bai Ning?
Grey version of QingLin - Qing Yin
Mm. Grey looks good.
Keep it going! And no modern chain platform boots underneath those dresses, please.
You know.
What is with Soom lately? I honestly think they need to take a break and reinvent some better ideas.
MD Clozel - Vala of Agony
Agony? Perhaps it is the teaser but the only agony I see from her is the agony of BORING and MEH. That face has no personality on it whatsoever? She is like a Beryl with all the attitude detoxed. .-.
Come ON! you use to make interesting and pretty dolls!
Pipos, on the other hand!
I love the fact that they are moving beyond Alice. Let's face it, Alice sell. But everyone and their mom have also done Alice. Alice in different ages, dark Alice, loli Alice, crazy Alice. IT IS DONE TO DEATH. I think people are attached to it because it is easy to do Alice. Get a pretty girl give her a blue dress, some sort of bunny, or bunny ears and cat or cat ears. YA! Alice. BOO.
Let's move on! There are so many other stories that would make interesting dolls! How about Red Riding Hood? And other fairy tales?
Anyway. I am looking forward very much to see what Pipos do with the Wizard of Oz theme. :D It would most certainly be pretty, but how pretty? Is the question.
There is this "Another Secret" company that released two dolls based on the red riding hood. But yah, more fairy-tales you guys, not only mermaids and Alice. What about more Asian folk, or European?
ReplyDeleteAnd you're right about Soom too. You know, the most interesting gallery threads with Soom dolls feature the "old" molds (up to 2009/early 2010). There are exceptions though. But people loved Beryl, or Sard, or Vesuvia, because they had "attitude". Now I see Soom and is a bunch of remakes and hybrids and clones and laziness all over.
LOL I definitely love you for speaking exactly how I feel about Clozel. I was like (._.) ..... SO BORING, EXPRESSIONLESS! SHE'S NOT EVEN DARK OR AGONY-LIKE AT ALL!!! 8( I kept searching for the agony and it just wasn't there...
ReplyDeleteI am perpetually amazed at people who are always so in love with every new soom.
I'm tired of the Alice/fairytale/model/singer themes [might as well toss crobi in too]....Everyone and their moms and their grandmas and cousins thrice-removed hahaha.
I'd much rather something that perhaps the company comes up with itself. That's perhaps why I'm a bit more fascinated with Iplehouse's stories, though only marginally.
